ISLAMABAD: United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has appreciated Pakistan for hosting millions of refugees despite its internal crises and setting a good example.
While addressing the 40 Years of Afghan Refugees Presence in Pakistan: A New Partnership for Solidarity, Antonio Guterres said that for over four decades, Pakistan has been generously hosting the world’s largest number of Afghan refugees.
He also said that the world community has not participated enough with Pakistan in terms of hosting refugees. He said that Pakistan was the second-largest country in terms of hosting refugees.
Pakistan is one of the largest refugee-hosting countries in the world, it as home to an estimated 2.4 million Afghan people, the UN Secretary-General said. He said despite many challenges Pakistan set a good example.
The Secretary-General said they are here to serve Afghan people who deserve peace and stability and repatriation with safety and dignity.He said people of Pakistan extended generosity to the Afghan refugees for forty years, and this story is very close to his heart.
The UN Secretary-General said we must recognise that international support has been minimal as compared to national contribution. He said the time has come for the international community to act and deliver with responsibility sharing. He said refugees are a big challenge, but this conference shows commitment to solving the issue.
