Karachi has been gripped by severe traffic disruptions as protests led by Majlis-e-Wahdat-e-Muslimeen (MWM) continue to intensify across the city in response to the ongoing conflict in Parachinar, Kurram district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The protests, which began earlier this week, are centered around the escalating violence between rival groups in the region and the government’s failure to address the dire situation.
According to traffic police, sit-ins are ongoing at multiple locations in the city, including Star Gate, Malir 15, Kala Chapra, Shah Faisal Colony, and Numaish Chowrangi. Protesters have blocked key roads, including the vital Shahrah-e-Faisal, which has caused significant traffic jams, particularly affecting routes leading to the airport and other major areas. This has left commuters stranded and led to considerable disturbances throughout Karachi.
In light of the protests, the traffic police have issued an alternative traffic plan. Key roads have been closed, with diversions put in place to minimize the impact of the blockades:
- The road from MA Janah Road to Exhibition Chowrangi is closed for traffic. Commuters are being diverted via People’s Chowrangi, Guru Mandir, and Soldier Bazaar.
- Abu-ul-Hassan Isfahani Road to Super Highway and Abbas Town are also closed, with traffic being redirected via Paradise Bakery and Faria Chowk. Additionally, Five Star Chowrangi is closed, but traffic is being managed through the service road.
- For commuters traveling on Shahrah-e-Faisal, the road from Stargate to Malir is closed. Traffic is being diverted through Drug Road to Rashid Minhas Road.
- The National Highway Malir 15 Bridge to Quaidabad is also closed, further contributing to the growing traffic chaos.
As the protests spread, residents are facing prolonged delays, with those traveling to the airport and other vital destinations being especially impacted. The blockade of roads has made it nearly impossible for many to reach their flights or appointments on time.
