MIRPUR: An activist of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) was shot dead and two others were injured in separate incidents that marred polling in Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK).
The firing incident occurred in Charhoi area during the PTI activist Muhammad Zaheer was killed while another identified as Ramzan sustained injuries. In a separate incident, a PTI worker was injured after being attacked with sticks. He was shifted to a medical facility,
There were firing incidents reported in various polling stations in the LA-10 Kotli-3. The firing incidents were reported in the limits of polling stations numbers 91, 92, 93, 94, 95 and 101 of the constituency.
The vehicle of a PPP candidate contesting the polls was damaged in the firing incident. PPP senior leader Senator Taj Haider registered the complaint with the AJK Election Commission.
A day earlier, a clash reportedly broke out between workers of the PPP and PTI ahead of polls in the region. Police said a clash was reported between workers of two political parties in the Khaliqabad area of Mirpur district. Four people including PPP and PTI workers were injured in the incident.
Free and transparent election
Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Justice retired Abdul Rashid Sulehria on Sunday said best arrangements made to ensure fair and transparent elections.
Addressing media, the CEC said that the incumbent PTI government has provided every kind of necessary support for arranging the elections. He urged the people of Kashmir to use their right to vote. He hoped that turnout would remain more than 56 percent in the elections.
Replying to a question, he said that action against Federal Minister for Kashmir Affairs and Gilgit-Baltistan Ali Amin Gandapur is being taken, adding that they will continue to exercise their powers.
