NEPRA approves K-Electric’s multi-year tariff despite federal objections

The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has officially issued a notification approving K-Electric’s multi-year tariff from 2023 to 2030, despite the federal government’s review request.

According to the issued notification, the average electricity transmission price for K-Electric has been set at Rs. 39.97 per unit. In addition, the distribution tariff has been set at Rs. 3.31 per unit, while the transmission tariff has been determined at Rs. 2.86 per unit.

This approval has been granted while ignoring the review request submitted by the Federal Ministry of Energy and the objections raised by the Power Division, which had expressed concerns over the specific concessions granted to K-Electric.

It is noteworthy that last month, the federal government had formally submitted a request to NEPRA for a review of K-Electric’s tariff. Federal Minister for Energy, Awais Leghari, stated that Pakistan’s energy sector cannot afford to bear the burden of any private or public entity’s poor performance, nor can electricity rates be increased to cover such losses.

He said that their review request is a responsible step aimed at promoting a sustainable and healthy environment in the electricity distribution system. Awais Leghari further stated that the government wishes to make this process transparent and fair, so that the financial burden on both the government and the public is minimized.
