The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) announced on Friday that monsoon currents are currently entering Sindh and the upper regions of the country, bringing the possibility of thunderstorms and heavy rainfall in Karachi from tonight through Sunday.
According to the PMD, temperatures in Karachi during this period are expected to range between 28°C and 35°C.
It is worth mentioning that Karachi witnessed its first monsoon rain of the year on June 26, with moderate to heavy rainfall reported in several areas, including Kathore, Gadap, Gulshan-e-Hadeed, Malir, Safoora, Saadi Town, Model Colony, I.I. Chundrigar Road, Tariq Road, DHA, Scheme 33, North Nazimabad, and others.
In its latest forecast, the PMD also predicted intermittent heavy rains with strong winds and thunderstorms in various parts of the country over the coming days.
Monsoon currents are expected to strengthen further in the upper and central regions of Pakistan starting July 20, while a new westerly wave is likely to enter northern Pakistan on July 21.
Rain and thunderstorms, with moderate to heavy showers expected in Karachi, Hyderabad, Tharparkar, Umerkot, Thatta, Badin, Mirpurkhas, Tando Allahyar, Tando Muhammad Khan, Shaheed Benazirabad, Larkana, Dadu, Sukkur, Ghotki, Khairpur, Jacobabad, Sanghar, and Kashmore on July 18 night till July 20.
Meanwhile, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa is likely to experience heavy to very heavy rainfall, windstorms, and thunderstorms expected in Chitral, Dir, Swat, Kohistan, Malakand, Shangla, Battagram, Abbottabad, Mansehra, Peshawar, Mardan, Nowshera, Bannu, D.I. Khan, Kohat, and tribal districts including Waziristan, Orakzai, Bajaur, Khyber, Mohmand, and Kurram between July 21 and 25.
Heavy to very heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and windstorms expected in Rawalpindi, Islamabad, Murree, Galiyat, Attock, Chakwal, Jhelum, Lahore, Gujranwala, Sialkot, Faisalabad, Sargodha, and surrounding districts beginning on July 20 evening and expected to last till July 25.
From July 21 to 25, there is a risk of flash flooding in local streams and nullahs in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Murree, Galiyat, Islamabad, Rawalpindi, northeastern Punjab, and parts of Kashmir.
Urban flooding is likely in low-lying areas of Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Lahore, Gujranwala, Sialkot, Sargodha, Faisalabad, Okara, Nowshera, and Peshawar due to heavy rainfall.
There is a risk of landslides and mudslides in the hilly regions of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Murree, Galiyat, Kashmir, and Gilgit-Baltistan.
