According to the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) report for the fiscal year 2023-24, K-Electric has emerged as the distribution company with the highest number of fatalities.
The report indicates that there were 34 incidents of fatalities in K-Electric’s service areas, which included 32 civilians and 2 employees.
NEPRA’s report stated that a total of 140 fatalities occurred across various distribution companies’ jurisdictions. The Islamabad Electric Supply Company (IESCO) reported 26 fatalities, while the Peshawar Electric Supply Company (PESCO) reported 20, the Lahore Electric Supply Company (LESCO) reported 18, and the Gujranwala Electric Power Company (GEPCO) reported 9 fatalities.
The statistics for other companies are as follows:
- Hyderabad Electric Supply Company (HESCO) and Quetta Electric Supply Company (QESCO) each recorded 9 fatalities.
- Faisalabad Electric Supply Company (FESCO) reported 7.
- Sukkur Electric Power Company (SEPCO) reported 5.
- Multan Electric Power Company (MEPCO) reported 3 fatalities.
NEPRA criticized the electric distribution companies for failing to meet safety standards and emphasized that these incidents could have been prevented through the implementation of strict safety protocols. The authority called for immediate action and the enforcement of safety regulations to prevent further accidents.
The report highlighted the urgent need for improvement in safety measures across all distribution companies, particularly due to the significant concerns raised by K-Electric’s performance.
