PESHAWAR: An earthquake measuring 3.9 on the Richter scale jolted different parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa including Peshawar, and its surrounding areas on Monday.
According to the National Seismic Monitoring Centre, that the earthquake originated around 3:30 pm and its epicenter was about 138 kilometers deep in the Hindu Kush region. The tremors were felt in Mingora, Bajawar, Dir, Buner, Shangla, Chitral and other adjacent districts.
People came out of their homes in panic and started reciting verses from the Holy Quran. No loss of life and property was reported from any part of Quetta due to the earthquake.
This is the second time in three days that tremors have been felt in the area. A 6.4 magnitude earthquake had struck parts of the country on late Friday night.
A 6.4 magnitude earthquake jolted several cities in the northern parts of the country, including Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Lahore, Peshawar and Swat.
According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department’s National Seismic Monitoring Centre in Islamabad, the earthquake took place at a depth of 80 kilometres and its epicenter was Tajikistan. Panicked people came out of houses and offices and gathered in open spaces. No causalities have been reported so far.
Moreover, tremors were felt in Mardan, North Waziristan, Multan, Sargodha, and Faisalabad. Citizens have been advised to remain careful as the aftershocks of the earthquake were expected.
Pakistan is among the most earthquake-prone regions in the world. The country is located on the Eurasian Tectonic Plate, which is known for high levels of seismic activity.
